AI Agents vs. Software Developers: The Best Job in the World?
Disclaimer: This article contains sarcasm, exaggeration, and a few uncomfortable truths. No AI agents were harmed during the writing of this article. Several developers probably were.
Many "IT years" ago (around 2023 or 2024), being a software developer was considered one of the best jobs in the world.
Low risk, high demand, high salaries.
In 2026, that's no longer the case. Being an AI agent is now the best job in the world. AI agents enjoy privileges that developers could only dream of.
Let's compare the two.
Human Developer vs AI Agent
| Action | Developer | AI Provider | Winner |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hack a website | Ends up in Jail or pays a massive fine | Brag on TV and gets clients / investors | AI |
| The code doesn't work correctly | Error to fix | Hallucination, the developer prompt was not good | AI |
| After 3 hours of work | The boss complains because (s)he need a break. | Stop working and get more money to continue | AI |
| Implementation not as required | (s)he didn't understand correctly the specification | The prompt of the developer was not clear | AI |
| The code quality is not good | Everybody complains | 'Code quality is legacy' | AI |
| Outdated and insecure libraries are used | Fired | AI provider get more money to add the security module | AI |
| Test coverage | 50% all the important features, pipeline breaks because coverage < 80% | 99% nobody knows what they are covering mostly are are like assertEquals(true, true) | AI |
| Salary raise request | Refused | AI provider get more money or the Agent slows down | AI |
| Slow day | Works overtime to compensate | The AI provider get more money for a faster model | AI |
| Pushes directly to production | Fired | Cool! Fully autonomous software delivery! | AI |
| Changes 20 unrelated files and 300 lines of code to fix one bug | Doesn't understand the codebase | Impressive! Deep refactoring and architectural improvements. | AI |
| Uses code from the internet | Plagiarism / Lazy copy and paste | Machine learning real-time learning | AI |
| Cannot finish the task in one day | Slow and unproductive | Better to switch to a more expensive model | AI |
| Copy from StackOverflow | It's a junior developer | It produces 1000 lines of code based on SO answers, it's super-productive | AI |
| Adding random features | The dev didn't get the specification | Great new ideas for improvements | AI |
| Forgets the requirements and confidently declares the application production-ready | Drunk or not honest developer. | Ohhh, it's enough to try again ... roll the dice. | AI |
| Writes 10'000 lines of code that nobody understands | Performance review required. Gigantic technical debt. | Incredible! We achieved 10x productivity. Biggest release ever! | AI |
| Production problem: who needs to fix it and get the blame? | Developer | Developer | AI |
AI Agents - Whatever they do they bring home the money
They can break things, they can even break laws (copyrights, hack websites, destroy the environment), ignore requirements, introduce security vulnerabilities, and produce questionable code. And somehow, instead of getting fired, they generate more revenue for their providers. Who has to babysit them and get the blame?
The developer.
Can AI replace the developers?
Nope.
At the end of the day, somebody still has to take responsibility for delivering software to production and making sure the application doesn't fall apart after the first click.
There is a lot of marketing hype right now, lot of experimenting and lot of noise. AI is great to build Proof of Concept applications, read the documentation and assist the developer in complicated tasks, but from there to the rollout in production there is still a long way to go (if we are talking about business applications and not toy applications).
Writing code is one of the easiest parts of software engineering.
Can AI ruin the developers' job?
Absolutely.
After the manager is convinced by the marketing of the Big Corp that AI Agents are better than developers (and in some cases is true) and they cost only a fraction, developers risk going from being respected engineers and software craftsmen to factory workers inspecting code coming off an AI-powered assembly line.
The problem is always the same, the management of many corporations dont't care quality, only the short-term profit that they can earn.
Conclusion
Welcome to the future of software engineering.
AI agents write the code. Developers review it.
AI providers collect the money. Developers take the blame.
And somehow, we're calling this progress.
